Selling your home is a huge undertaking. While it may seem as simple as slapping on a fresh coat of paint and sprucing things up, there’s a long list of projects every homeowner needs to accomplish if they want to sell their home at the price it’s worth.
If you’re planning to sell your home in March, it’s already time to get started! Here’s a month-by-month timeline to help you make your house look like someone else’s dream home.
January: Packing Up and Cleaning Out
Clearing your home of clutter is a huge project, and you’ll be grateful if you get started early! You want your whole home to look open and spacious. Buyers do not want to see a big mess!
Put away anything that’s just lying around the house.
Move your boxes out of the basement and into the garage.
Buyers love storage space, so free up some room in the closet & kitchen cabinets.
Start moving small pieces of furniture out of the way.
Don’t feel like you’re wasting time by starting so early! Getting rid of clutter now will help you with the next steps.
February: Fixing Things Up
Now that your home is spacious and clean, you’ll want to take care of any necessary repairs. Make sure your home has no faults that would turn buyers off to purchasing your home at the price it’s worth.
Get your home inspected now to prevent delays in the closing process.
Take care of all interior repairs! For example:
Fix that crack in the ceiling.
Repair the toilet.
Complete all repairs and improvements on your home’s exterior. Buyers will decide if they want to see the inside of your home in less than 6 seconds of seeing the exterior, so make sure you have plenty of curb appeal!
Give your front door a fresh new coat of paint.
Install a new door-knocker.
Rip up those dead bushes.
Fix that wobbling handrail.
Make sure your front door and the entrance to your home are absolutely flawless. This is your only chance to make a good first impression!
March: The Final Stage
When spring arrives and you’re almost ready to put up your for-sale sign, it’s time to make your house look like a model home.
Put up a welcome mat and plant some flowers by the front door.
Clean off your kitchen & bathroom countertops.
Get rid of all photographs and minimize personal touches..
You don’t want anything to distract buyers from visualizing themselves in your home, and leaving up personal items will do just that.
By the time you’re done, your house should look like it’s been staged with your own furniture.
